Digging In, Figuring It Out:
10 Things I’ve Seen in Mumbai
1.a typewritten letter from Gandhi to Hitler in which Gandhi asks Hitler to show restraint (in Mani Bhavan Gandhi Sangrahalaya, one of the most important Gandhi museums in the country)
2.A redheaded Indian guy on a motorbike trying to sell me what he called “my deepest desires”--porn, hashish, women
3.a beaten-up stray dog delicately eating a plate of biscuits someone kindly set down for him outside a shop
4.a stunning hot pink sari worn by a woman carrying boards on her head
5.the Towers of Silence on Malabar Hill where Parsis carry out funeral rites (the dead are laid out in the open air and are picked clean by vultures)
6.the Taj Mahal Hotel (classic waterfront colonial hotel built by the famous Parsi industrialist JN Tata)
7.the Gateway to India (Mumbai’s most famous landmark)
8.a bottle of Kingfisher beer that cost more than dinner
9.a most delicious, mouth-watering garlic nan
10.the thinnest man I’ve ever seen toting stacks of Styrofoam on his head
